Unfortunately for Boston, Game 3 on their home floor didn’t start off as planned. Led by Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker, the Celtics were looking for their first NBA Finals appearance since 1987. The Celtics returned home for Game 3 of the 2002 Eastern Conference Finals after stealing Game 2 on the road. The Hawks’, Clippers’ and Grizzlies’ comebacks - as well as the Sixers’, Jazz’s and Timberwolves, collapses - rank among the largest in NBA playoff history, but they don’t come out on top. Memphis trailed by 26 in the second quarter and as much as 23 in the third before ending the game on a 54-22 run. The Memphis Grizzlies overcame a 26-point deficit to steal Game 3 against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Less than a week into the 2022 playoffs, the league saw another historic comeback. Terance Mann led the charge with 39 points for the Kawhi Leonard-less Clippers, who also won four straight games to overcome a 2-0 series deficit. Two days later, the Los Angeles Clippers reached their first ever Western Conference finals behind a 25-point Game 6 comeback at home against the Utah Jazz. Joel Embiid hit a pair of free throws to put the Sixers up 72-46 with 8:31 left in the third quarter, but the Sixers managed to score just 34 points over the final 20 minutes. The Hawks took things a level higher by climbing back from a 26-point deficit in Game 5 against the Sixers at Wells Fargo Center. The Brooklyn Nets then completed a 17-point comeback against the Milwaukee Bucks in Game 5 behind a herculean performance from Kevin Durant. Boston, meanwhile, will look to force a Game 7, one that will give them the rare opportunity to make history. Game 6 is on Saturday in Miami, where the Heat will look to become the second eight seed to make the NBA Finals. Haywood Highsmith - getting the 36 minutes that Gabe Vincent left vacant as he sat out with an ankle sprain - scored 15 points off the bench in his first real action this postseason. Jimmy Butler had a meager 14 points, five rebounds, and five assists, though he sat for much of the fourth. White shot 72 percent from the field and 75 percent from three in his best outing this postseason. Boston never trailed, forced 16 Miami turnovers, and knocked down 41 percent of their threes. Marcus Smart (23 points and five steals), Jayson Tatum (21 points, eight rebounds, and 11 assists), and Jaylen Brown (21 of his own) all finished in double-figures to lead the charge. (It should have been a bigger blowout, but garbage time is called garbage time for a reason.)ĭerrick White had 24 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead the way for the Celtics. They won by 17 in Game 4 on Miami’s home floor, and then promptly took the Heat to task with a misleading 13-point win in Boston. But suddenly, Boston has won two games in a row to make this a series, and has looked dominant doing it. Then again, so did the sweep that looked and felt inevitable after Game 3’s debacle of a performance from the Celtics, one that put them in a 3-0 hole. A close-out opportunity at home feels almost storybook. Teams that start a series with a 3-0 advantage are 150-0, after all. The Heat, given their commanding start to the series, still own a 3-2 advantage, and now have a chance to close out the series at home. On Wednesday night, the Celtics took one small step closer to history, beating the Heat in dominant fashion on their home floor to send the series back to Miami for Game 6. Given that they’re still alive today, I’ll give you one guess as to what their record is in those games. Thursday night marked the fourth time the Boston Celtics have faced and elimination scenario this postseason. Celtics fend off Heat at home, 110-97, force Game 6 in Miami ![]()
